Research: Music Video Genres

Music Video Genres

A genre, in regards to music videos is a style or category that a type of music video belongs to. A music video has its own characteristics that enable us as the audience to determine the genre it belongs to. For example, the music video for ‘Skillet - Sick Of It’ ‘Belongs to the Rock genre, this is evident as the music is generally face paced then suddenly has a extremely loud base which then creates an explosive image within the video. Also the generic stereotypical conventions such as the use of make up and clothing which relates to the Rock theme.

Its important for the audience to identify the music video genre as they'll be able to know if its their type of music and continue watching.

There are many genres within the Music industry. Examples of genres are as follows:

Pop
R&B
Hip-hop
Rap
House
  Rock
  Jazz
  Dance
  Drum & Bass
Electronic
Folk
    Classical
  Indie
Reggae
Grime
   Fusion
  Gospel

Rock

Rock bands would usually use a lot of performance in their music videos and less narrative because a lot of these artists play music for their themselves and not the industry. This generally why the music videos don’t make sense most of the time and are random imagery, which often involves breaking, burning or even stuff, which cannot be explained. On the other hand, the majority of pop artists create a product specifically to make money through the use of narrative.

Rap

Topics that rap artists tend to base their music on today are:

   - ‘Life’ of a certain individual or group
   - Drugs
   - Love, lust / desire

CONVENTIONS OF RAP MUSIC

Typical conventions of rap music include:

  •                    Casual clothing, nothing too characterised but more subtle and loose.

  •          Sections of direct contact with the camera (the artist usually spends a lot of time looking straight into the camera as if to talk or have a conversation with the audience)

  •          Props regarding costume tend to be used, for e.g. Jewellery (male rap artists are commonly known to wear heavy chains or prominent rings)

  •           Show a clear display of emotions – if the tone of the song is angry, the artist is likely to present this through their gestures and facial expressions.

  •           Today, a lot of rap artists have another artist featuring in their track (if a male rapper, they may decide to employ a female singer to vocalise the chorus.

  • 50 cent window shopper

The music video to 50 cent window shopper is a great example of the generic conventions that take place in music videos for the 'rap' genre. Throughout the music video the audience can see imagery of 50 cent living a luxurious lifestyle, this is evident through all the super cars, money, jewellery and girls. We can infer that he's living 'life in the fast lane'. A clear generic convention is shown when he buys a burger and the price comes up, this illustrates that he doesn't care about the money he's spending as he has a lot.

  1. Well started. Rock and Rap are explored quite well.

    To improve;
-make a list of more genres
-explore some more characteristics of certain genres. Include images to support your ideas
-Why is it important to follow generic conventions in videos? Think about audience/industry expectations - examples
-Conclude: how has this helped you with your planning. What do you need to make sure you do?
